Yuezhong, I was also away when I lost my grandmother, who was dealing with dementia in her last days. I know this grief never truly goes away, but I also know she was so proud of you. Beautiful reflections, thank you for these words

“There is a lot of irony in being the first person to suspect that something was wrong with my grandmother’s memory while also being the family member furthest away from her…. she had completely forgotten that I was thousands of miles away, and she must have missed me terribly.”

ooof. those feelings :’( this reminds me of old ladies who have dementia in hospital wards, most of them would just be yelling out their son’s/daughter’s names repeatedly. Though their memory and cognition fail them, their love still remains close.

I hope things came full circle for you during your 30th and glad you got to visit home during it, happy belated birthday :)

Thank you, Heidi! Everyone has been telling me that their 30s are better than their 20s, so I really looking forward to experiencing the best decade yet!

Both decades have pros and cons but I definitely feel more confident, grounded and wiser in my 30s compared to my 20s.

Before Covid, I was visiting home about once a year. Next month will be the first time that I'd be visiting since 2018. I am excited, but also super nervous!

The reflections on your mother's strength and the emotional moments shared are deeply moving. Your vivid storytelling about turning 30 and the memories of missed events resonated with me. Great piece.
